A manufactured home is a type of prefabricated housing that is built in a factory and then transported to a site for installation. These homes are constructed according to the HUD Code (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development standards), which sets national standards for:
- Design
- Construction
- Strength and durability
- Transportability
- Fire resistance
- Energy efficiency
Key Characteristics of Manufactured Homes:
HUD-certified: All manufactured homes built after June 15, 1976, must meet HUD standards and carry a HUD certification label.
Built in a factory: Unlike site-built homes, they are constructed entirely off-site.
Transported on a chassis: They usually come with a permanent steel frame (chassis) which allows them to be moved.
Placed on various foundations: Can be placed on blocks, piers, crawlspaces, or permanent foundations such as stem walls and basements.
Single-wide, double-wide, or triple-wide: These refer to the size and layout. Double-wides and triple-wides are made of multiple sections joined together at the site.
